I still love black lace, even if it has been floating around for quite a while.
I am living at my parents right now which has pretty much murdered my sense for inspiration but the one good thing about it is that my sister is living here too and has an insanely big wardrobe of mostly topshop dresses. I am going to thieve everything she owns; in particular a black lace long-sleeved cocktail dress, which I think will look excellent with a studded denim jacket.

Beach Leather

Leather jacket on the beach? It should be a 'no' but Lara makes it a probable 'yes'. Depending on the temperature of the beach of course.

I usually hate that time of the year where magazines crack out their beachwear editorials, as they go two ways: boho hippy straw hats and seventies inspired prints on a beach in Goa; or South of France prostitute-style, with bathing suits that look like the one Borat wears in the film of the same name. But anyway, I like the idea of wearing a relatively simple bikini with a cut-off t shirt, or a sleeveless denim jacket.

Basically, this editorial gives me hope that maybe this year we might not be coerced by Cosmo into buying some cheap floaty beaded nylon kaftan under the guise that it is 'timeless', 'flattering' and will 'take you from beach to bar'. Ughhh.

Well well well, its May today. Scary stuff, this year is flying by. Word on the street is Britain will have a sunny summer, for the first time in about 4 years. I am excirted about this as it should coincide as my long-awaited move back to London-town. Where the streets are paved with gold! And litter/crap.

WAR...and The Selby

I keep hearing things about WAR magazine on the grapevine and so was very pleased to see that some lucky bugger had got their hands on a copy (it's free, and probably only distributed in London) and scanned a load of pages on tFS. They have some excellent couture show coverage, and if I am not mistaken I believe the shots above are by Bella Howard (who without doubt is the next Matt Irwin/Terry Richardson). The first one is anyway, i'm sure of it. I am always dubious of alleged 'hipster', Shoreditch-style magazines that come and go quickly, but it seems as if this one has some valuable substance and some excellent photography so here's hoping I get my hands on a copy soon.

Also I have been a very neglectful blogger recently, I feel as if I haven't been scouring my favourites and replying to comments as much as I used to. I will smack myself and make it my business to be better!

Oh and I just discovered that Bella Howard and Rosa Connell have been featured on The Selby. Check it out, they have the coolest house and there are some stunning shots there...

Their editorial styling is slick, simple and sexy and the magazine itself is really well-designed, graphics wise. I eagerly anticipate further editions...

My friend Roxie has recently put her artwork online and I suggest all those art lovers/appreciators of the female form out there go check it out. She gave me the first picture, 'Woman with the purple rose', when she moved out of the house we shared and it has come to be one of my most treasured possessions. A rare beauty amongst my binbags of useless tat!

I love her sumptious celebration of the curves and shadows of the female form and the decadent, seductive fifties themes peppered by wallpaper florals. The paintings capture the sexualised woman shifting in our imaginations from the flowers in her kitchen and on her pinafore to the flowers of her boudoir and her underwear, and Roxie's moleskin illustrations are very evocative of the art nouveau illustrator Aubrey Beardsley.

I went to the hairdressers today and came across this ed in a Harpers Bazaar from October 08. I am in no-mans land right now. And that wasn't a joke about my newly single status either! I am moving back to my parents in a few days (just for a bit - the idea that I will be there longer than a few weeks makes me want to murderise myself) and have finished at my old job so am currently a very unproductive lady of leisure.
I thought I would enjoy this time of relaxation but alas, no. I am bored of E4's relentless repeating of One Tree Hill, Friends and Scrubs, and being unemployed is forcing me to eat much more than I would at work. Yeah that's right, I am being FORCED to constantly eat Marks and Spencers cookies. Mmmmm I have an abusive relationship with sweet baked goods.

On another note, Juergen Teller's distinctive grimy style of photography offsets very well against Raquel's Louis Vuitton dress. I don't generally wear dresses but for this badboy, I would make an exception and wear it EVERY DAY.

Back in the UK

I am back! Landed at stupid o'clock yesterday, went to sleep for a few hours and then ate some NYC bagels and felt depressed. NYC is amazing! I ended up staying in Williamsburg (actual best place ever) and went to some amazing gigs, bought a sick $12 fur coat and felt loved by NYC men (people in the USA are so much nicer...they love my shoes, my sunglasses, my eye makeup...hell, even my face!). In conclusion, I had a blast and am now trying to figure out a way to return. Hmmm. What have you guys been up to whilst ive been gone? Tell me some stories :)

Friday Feeling

When oh when will someone give me several thousand pounds?! I am not asking for much, am I? ;)
Jokes aside, today I applied for 'flu camp', a clinical trial where you are given the flu, quarantined for two weeks, given potential cures and then handed up to £3,000 for your troubles. Sweet deal, hope they let me do it - then perhaps I would be able to afford the above highly desirable items:

1. Acid wash sleeveless jacket, £155 by Erin Wasson x RVCA
2. Studded leather jacket, £120 by Topshop
3. Lace, chiffon and tulle shirt, £315 (reduced form £775) by Meadham Kirchhoff
4. Acid wash denim print leggings, £22 by Topshop

Today I also purchased the Topshop 'Rodarte' style jumper, which looks nothing like the original press versions (typical). It will surely break my heart when it arrives...but I thought i'd give it a go anyway.
I am thinking of the Rodarte jumper like a diagram of the evolution of man - you know, those pictures in science books showing monkey slowly turning into man over thousands of years. Well the Rodarte/Topshop jumper is like that, BUT BACKWARDS:

From gorgeous spidery soft yet abrasive knits...to a very authentic yet accessible homage to the original...to something still kind of nice but potentially very cheap-looking...

Lets hope it turns out to be nicer than my current pessimistic outlook...

I was watching a trashy morning news show earlier and a Milan Fahion Week segment quoted one designer as saying that women should apply more imagination to their wardrobes in a time of economic crisis. I suppose this is the garment equivalent of 'putting on a brave face', and judging by the SS and AW 09 collections it appears that recession is also a time for spending your sad, almost-gone pennies on investment and label-signature pieces. Although I don't think my jar of coppers is really going to cut it when thinking about purchasing this Margiela jacket, which is dauntingly 'price upon request'!

I am not sure why but I have been feeling very uninspired for the last few days. I suppose it is a combination of the fact that I am busy at work with tasks that are of a complete disinterest to me, and the typical, neverending grey UK weather. I doubt there is a fashion blog in the world that won't feature Alexander Wang's F/W 2009 collection, and for good reason! Above are my favourites, in particular the cropped leggings/cycle shorts with the pointy witch/motorcycle boots. Its so sexy, the whole collection evokes an image of Helmut Newton's 70s and 80s portraits of powerful, dominatrix-leather clad women. And I am a fan o'black so any collection featuring it this heavily is going to win my never-ending love.

Taking a look at the other F/W collections it appears that we are in for a ladylike winter, with mature structured shapes, houndstooth, tweed and clean, modern suiting seen for Preen, DKNY and Karen Walker.

Yesterday I booked my ticket to NYC for March...and I am so excited! I have never been there before but have always wanted to go. A couple of my best friends are living in Brooklyn right now so going to stay with them, which makes the trip even more bargainous than before (one positive by-product of a crumbling economy = cheaper flights).
AAAHHHH I CAN'T WAIT! A couple of great bands, Team Robespierre and Les Savy Fav, are also playing in Brooklyn whilst im there, which makes things even better :)

Yet another cracker of an ed from March's UK Vogue. Like many of you, I am a Vogue Nippon kind of girl, but I have to admit that UK Vogue has improved a lot in the past few months in terms of showing some edgier styling (next stop - better covers!).

Those stripey DMs are brilliant (they are just white ones that were customised by the stylist) and the Gareth Pugh outfit in the third pic is just insane. Its Beetle Juice but much less creepy!
This ed also features that Alexander McQueen all-in-one that I am massively coveting...I wasn't going to show it again because I posted it a while ago but what the hell, it is gorgeous and maybe if I big it up enough, someone might send it to me. Unlikely, but you can't blame a girl for trying! (The only thing I ever get sent is pizza leaflets. Oh and offers to take out credit cards with high interest rates. Ho hum).

My first blogger visit today was to Style Bubble, mainly because I saw Susie featured in the Observer Woman magazine yesterday and wanted to see what she had written about it. I immediately decided that this is going to be my favourite outfit of the day...even though it is only 10.30am. Its mental and I love it.

In other news, I finally got round to studding something this weekend. Woohoo! I bought a light blue denim jacket from ebay for 99p, cut the arms off and went stud-crazy. It looks pretty cool! I am proud of myself for not messing this up.

I had a little one-woman debate in my mind today about whose SS09 collection I would like to get my grubby little hands on the most (main condenders: Alexander Wang, Balmain, Christopher Kane...result: inconclusive!) which then led me to ponder what collection I would realistically get the most wear out of if it happenned to all be delivered to my door tomorrow.

And the result? Conveniently it was Topshop Unique (convenient in price comparison to Balmain, that is).

I think most of us can confess to a love affair with eighties denim right now, and I am always a fan of a well-cut sexy suit (shoulder pads left in the eighties, thank you). I am sure you have all seen the collection already, but I am always happy to champion Topshop's design efforts because there isn't another UK store that I believe is even close to them in terms of styling and designer collaborations.
Right now I am eagerly waiting for their SS09 collections to hit down in store or online so I can buy myself some decent clothes - I swear I have worn the same 2 t shirts and jeans/leggings out for the past 3 months now! I have turned into a right dirtbag.

If any of you guys in Paris are about on 30th and 31st January then you should go check out my housemate's band Maths Class. They are playing an Entrisme Magazine secret gig on the Friday and then at Fleche d'Or on the Saturday (here is their myspace) so if you are in town you should head their way for party time.
I was going to jump on the train to Paris too if I was beng made redundant, but alas my employer has decided to keep me because I am such an AMAZING WORKER! Therefore, no sweet redundancy money to have french fun with. Boo.

Lee Miller

I have been tagged by Electric Feel to make a post about women I admire. This is a pretty cool tag because there is one particular woman I had recently been thinking about doing a post on and so I take it as fate that I have this opportunity. And that woman is the photographer Lee Miller.

Lee Miller was a model in 1920s New York but moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a photographer, and subsequently became the muse of and apprentice to surrealist photographer Man Ray. Miller went on to become a seminal photojournalist, working during WW2 for publications such as Vogue and Life amongst the horrors of the battlefield, and after this carried on working as a fashion photographer.

Miller also had a chequered personal life - at 7 years old she was raped by a friend of the family and subsequently contracred gonorrhea, for which she suffered long periods of draconian, painful treatments. She had a bizarre relationship with her father, who would frequently photograph her in nude shots as a young woman, and later in life suffered from severe clinical depression. Bizarrely again, Miller's son had no idea as to the kind of life his mother had led until she died in 1977. On clearing out her attic, he came across boxes and boxes of negatives and prints from her time at war and subsequently published a biography of her life with many unseen images included.

Probably one of the saddest stories I have ever heard about Miller's life was when she was leaving the USA for Paris on a ship and her lover, a pilot, flew over and scattered the ship's deck with red roses, but on his journey back to base his plane crashed and he tragically died.

Miller had the most bizarre, interesting, couageous and well-lived life of any woman I have ever heard of, let alone a woman born over 100 years ago. You might want to read some more about her exploits here if you are as inspired as I am by Miller :)

I'm sure I am not the only one who is WELL EXCITED about Topshop's SS09 lookbook. Although I can't help but feel that their production quality has diminished slightly over the last year or two, the designing and styling is better than ever and I know I am going to be watching their website obsessively for the first drops of tight acid wash jeans, denim shirts, Rodarte style knits and studded everything.

So I am pretty much killing two birds with one stone in this post - and those beautiful birds are 'Masculine suiting' and 'Sara Blomqvist'! I was checking out Pony Ryder's blog today and read her interview with Sara, which then lead me to obsessively hawk through Fashion Spot for pics of her. I love how her delicate, elfin face is complemented by all this masculine tailoring. She is totally bewitching.

I had to pinch this image from Knight Cat's blog as I really love Chloe Sevigny and I think she looks pretty fine in this pic. I like how she mixes grunge with preppiness and never looks overstyled or uncomfortable.

Katy Perry is so clearly styled but I like her cute fifties outfits anyway. It is all very girly though - I find it hard to wear cute feminine clothes as I don't think they reflect my personality that well (eek! I am a man!). My housemate is the total opposite though, she has lots of sweet dresses with peter pan collars and polka dots, and I often have this weird desire to dress her up like a little doll. Actually that sounds a bit creepy...!

Hope you guys had an excellent weekend...yesterday I think I actually had the best beef roast ever made! It was ina local pub, and it had home-made yorkshires, really beefy gravy, mustard leeks, red cabbage, cheesy broccoli, carrots and some well crispy roast potatoes. Om nom nom I am practically dribbling!

I also read a hilarous interview with Peaches Geldof in the Observer Woman magazine over the weekend, which I would like to share with you here as she appears to be cropping up more and more on Cobrasnake and Skullset. Hellooooo! How was your christmas?
Mine was ok, it was nice to see my family and eat some excellent christmas dinner but cabin fever sets in after 2 days and so does the realisation that I have turned into my mother! Eek. I also ate more chocolate than I thought could ever exist and watched an unhealthy amount of crime dramas. Good times!

1. I love Meatloaf...not the food, the man! When I was a kid all I listened to was Meatloaf and Michael Jackson. Ive got rid of Wacko but meaty still remains.

This is one hot ed, and not only because its an Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin shoot! There's something I find really sexy about Americana eds. I think this is based in the contrast between the casual plaid shirts and jeans under a bright blue sky and the seductive, almost trashy tone of jewelled, thousand dollar gowns against the strip malls and neon lights...the latter being a luxe paradox that I am completely in love with.

So today is a half good/half bad day in the land of Blood Roses, in that my employer has told me and my colleagues that our jobs are at risk and redundancy will occur in Jan. MERRY FUCKING CHRISTMAS! Redundancy is obviously bad but I have been looking to leave for a while so this is a convenient forceful hand to push me. Maybe if I am lucky I can get a few quid out of them too! Eek.
